Summer Newsletter 2006

My name is Jade and I love to play hockey. I have gone to a hockey school called the Edge of Excellence every summer since I was eight years old. It’s a lot of fun and it helps me with my skating. I make lots of new friends and learn new things every time I go there. You get to have a skating analysis done so you can improve on the things the coach’s point out. Your day is broken up into on-ice, off-ice and snack and skills. At dry land training you get to pull tires, parachutes and bungee cords. During on-ice we do lots of skating drills and the odd puck passing drill. Snack and skills you usually watch a video about the rules of the camp, about what you learnt on the ice. Of course you eat your lunch. At the end of the week we play a game against each other. I love the camp every year. It’s so much fun because I like everything that goes on everyday. My future plan is to go to the full year school for hockey player’s called The Pursuit of Excellence and to make the Women’s Olympic Team.

JadeSpring Newsletter 2005: Jade’s Very Special Visit to China

Jade prepared for her visit by involving her school, friends and family in a fund-raising for her orphanage in Jinhua. We asked Jade to share her story with us.

As some of you may have read I was going to get a little sister from China. As we were planning our trip I found out that I would be able to visit the orphanage in Jin Hua City. My hometown! I asked my mom if I could do a fundraiser for the children who were still living there. I went to the principal of my school and we talked about different fundraiser ideas. (read more here).

JadeFall Newsletter 2004
I’ve heard that many people liked my last article but some had trouble with the pronunciation of the nicknames. So, I got some help from a local expert. Hope this helps! My favorite was Little One – Xiao Dong Xi (Sea-ou Dong She). My friend Justine thought Sunshine was the best one. Sunshine – Xiao Guang (Sea-ou Gwong). My mom really likes Sweetie or Sweetie Pie – Tian Tian (Tyan Tyan) Some of you may like Princess – Gong Zhu (Jong She) because it sounds nice. Energetic Child – Fei Mao Tui (Fe Mou Tay) would be a good name to use for a child that is very active. Kiss Kiss – Qian Qian (Chin Chin) if your child likes to give kisses. I’m really enjoying doing the article and I’m looking forward to your questions.

I am will to research almost anything. Just send a message to foi@canada.com addressed to “Ask Jade”.

JadeSummer Newsletter 2004

Dear Jade;

We will be adopting a little girl from China soon. We have a name for her but what can we do for a nickname. We would like to call her with a Chinese sounding nickname.

Soon-to-be-Parents

Dear Soon-to-be-Parents;
I also am adopting a baby sister from China in the New Year. Her name will be Lily. I have chosen to give her the nickname Chatterbox – Bai Ling Niao. I chose the name because I’m hoping she is a real talker like me. The nickname my parents have started calling me is Sweetie or Sweetie Pie – Tian Tian. This was not one of my favorites! I guess I won’t be sharing my article with them again before it is published. Here are some suggestions of other nicknames you may like to use. Sweetpea - Tian Dou, Little Treasure - Xiao Bao Bei, Little One - Xiao Dong Xi, Energetic Child - Fei Mao Tui, Princess- Gong Zhu & Little Rascal - Xio Tao Qi. I hope you like the nicknames and good luck with your new daughter. I’m pleased to join the FOI team as a junior columnist.
