Lucy's Report

Lucy, 12 years old, also traveled to China in 1996 to get her sister Zoe from Nanjing.

This March, some people went to get babies from China! We were some of those lucky people.

But before we went to get our babies, we went to Hong Kong! During the time we were in Hong Kong, we did a lot of really cool things. My favorite thing that we did was going on a sampan ride in the harbour.

Now, a sampan is a kind of boat the can seat about ten people. It was an

experience of a lifetime. I mean, how many Canadians get to ride in a harbour in Hong Kong?

Also, there were lots of kids along on this trip, and they were all great. All us kids got to go together in one sampan with our parents. It was really cool! We waved to people in other boats and most of them waved back. We had such a good time. The adults had a good time, too. They talked, took our pictures, and looked at the scenery.

The scenery was great. We saw about fifty boats all locked together to make a boat village. There were pets on some of the boats! On one boat, men were building another room on top of the house that was already on the boat! All of us kids had such a good time asking questions and looking around and getting salt water splashed in our mouths. We were sad when that ride ended, but the fun was not ever.

When we got to Guangzhou we were even more excited. Everyone was smiling and bouncing off the walls with anticipation. When the day came to get the babies, the adults were bouncing off the walls as much as the kids! We went in two different groups to get our babies. My parents and I and my sister Zoe were in the 4 o’clock group. We got on the bus and drove for what seemed like 3,000 hours! But we finally came to the government building. Once inside, we waited to get our babies. After a few minutes, we got the message that they were coming! I had never felt so much like fireworks in my life! One by one they came. First came the smallest, then there was a flood of babies! Ours came near the end. There she was—Clio! In flesh and blood. She was one of the only babies smiling! And she smiled the whole day while Zoe and I played with her. I will never forget it, all the rest of my life.

Zoe’s Journal March 15-17

According to her parent’s, the thing Zoe, 7, most wanted from Hong Kong was a pen that writes in several colors. This is because Zoe’s  friend, Eric who is from Hong Kong, has one.  Zoe got the pen and we have tried to faithfully recreate here the journal entries as Zoe wrote them. So here we have the first three days through Zoe’s eyes.

Today I had a great time. I almost saw all the exciting parts of Hong Kong.  I walked a lot. Tonight I will think about my baby sister because I will get her tomorrow. I'me pretty excited.  Tomorrow will be a big day for my family.  So far I think Hong Kong is pretty cool.  When I walk down the street all the women look at me and say I’me cute. When I got on the plane to Vancouver I was pretty excited. When I was on the way to Hong Kong I made some new friends. One was named Sarah the other was Shaylee, and the last person was Emma. The person I already knew was Hannah Lee. Right now I love China.

Today is a speicle day.  It’s a speicle day because I’me getting my baby sister.  Her name is going to be, Clio Anne.  I bet she is going to be the best baby in the world.  My mom got this baby for me.  This will be a day to remember.  Its also going to be the best day of my life.  The name Clio came from Greek mythology.  The name Clio means, the muse of History. Clio looks so cute and healthy.  But I bet she’ll miss the orphanage. I’me so excited I could blow my head of, because I’me getting Clio today. It is going to be great today. This is going to be the best day of my life.

Today was the coolest day of my life. The coolest thing was I adopt my baby sister. It was so amazing. I thought I was dreaming when I adopt Clio. She’s the cutest thing in the whole world. Other Chinese people think Clio is cute. But I think she’s cuter than my cosine Nathan. My other cosine Jia is not cuter than Clio.  Clio is the cutest baby in the whole wide world. She even looks cuter than me. Did you know that I asked for a baby sister and my mom and dad got me one? My mom and dad are the bestest people in the whole world. Because they are my parents and I love them and care for them and even like them.
