Adoption Stories

February 2000

Winter Newsletter 2000

February 2000 was a remarkable combination of people. Parents were: first-timers; leaving children and grandchildren behind; bring children along; return adopters; traveling solo; beginner and seasoned travellers; speaking a variety of languages . We expectant parents arrived in Nanjing  at 10pm. Venturing out to the street festival tuned us to the Asian atmosphere. Hot soup, dumplings and amazing paintings by a street artist sent us to bed with dream-like anticipation of the morning ahead -- receiving our babies.

With bundled-up babies placed in our arms, we started the task of juggling bottles and diapers with paperworkTrip 22nd and bus trips. Soon each beautiful child’s sparkle and spirit shone through, leaving parents to wonder how we ever lived without them. Instantly forming a cohesive group, we all got to know each other better very day. Exploring, dining, shopping, visiting temples, a silk factory and gardens were the highlights in Nanjing, Suzhou and Shanghai. In Beijing the Great Wall, Tianammen Square, Forbidden City, Temples and markets gave us a look at some of the famous sites. By then we were all like family, everyone becoming an auntie or uncle to each other’s children – great friends to each other.

China is a land of diversity. It has left us all with an appreciation of the heritage our children share.

Anyone who likes to shop for bargains will return from China with more than just a new family member. For example, our group met in the Lobby at 6:15 am and walked to the nearby wholesaler's market join Beijing's retailers. We were carrying calculators to negotiate discounts. Talk about bargains. $3 for children’s pants, $5 for shoes, $4 for cotton sweaters. And all were brand names. The deals were well worth the early hour.

Bring your friends since there are group discounts on some selections. Our group almost emptied some of the booths. Be prepared for crowds and lots of noise – this is a very popular market.
