Downloading and Printing the Newsletters
Printing the Downloadable Newsletters
The newsletters going back to 1997 are now available as downloadable PDF files. To download a given newsletter, go back to the newsletter index webpage – this is the page with the covers of all the newsletters.
All the newsletters were designed to be printed on both sides of a Tabloid size (11” x 17”) sheet of paper which folded into magazine size (8½” x 11”). This is what we have been distributing over the years. It is understood that very few families have printers that will print on tabloid size sheets so we have reconfigured the downloadable newsletters so that you can print them on ordinary Letter size paper and fold the sheets to “digest” (5½” x 11½”) size.

Each newsletter sheet contains 4 “pages”. Each sheet will print on a Letter-size sheet. After printing, you will fold the Letter-size sheets in half to end up with a somewhat smaller, digest-size version of the newsletter.
If your printer has a “duplexer” it will be able to automatically print the newsletter on both sides of the sheet. If not, you can print on both sides by printing one side at a time. Start with only one sheet of paper in the printer and print the newsletter. After printing a page, the printer will announce that it is out of paper; remove the printed page, place it back into the printer so that it prints on the backside. Continue inserting one sheet at a time.
Rationalizations
The printed newsletters (digest size) will be 70% of the original size. We could not rearrange the newsletters so that the pages printed full size on letter size paper since for virtually all the newsletters, we took advantage of the large spread of the centre-fold pages. In most cases, these are very difficult to reformat into two separate pages.
Because the newsletters are designed to be folded magazine-style into booklets, the pages are not presented in the PDF file in natural order. So reviewing them with Adobe Reader is frustrating. They will only appear in natural order if they are printed on both sides and folded – PDF page 1 & 2 on the first sheet, PDF pages 3 & 4 on the second sheet, and so on.
We have tried to maintain the original layout (albeit smaller) of the newsletters but In formatting the newsletters for the PDF files, we had to make minor size modifications in some elements so that the material fell within PDF margin constraints. The result is that some of the pages are not exactly as the original. |
